SCOPE: Strategic game of the American Civil War, 1861-1865
RULEBOOK VERBAGE (SPI): War Between the States is an operational
level simulation of the American Civil War 1861-1865. Operational level means
that the role of a Player encompasses elements of both strategy and tactics.
In some cases he plans the overall conduct of the war (strategy) while at
other times he must make decisions affecting the outcome of individual battles
(tactics). The game is conducted on three maps which join to portray the theatre
of operations from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Galveston, Texas to St. Joseph,
Missouri to Jacksonville, Florida. The playing pieces represent the armed
forces of the Union and Confederacy.

PBEM TOOLS:
WGA has created a Java application VASSAL
module to support my personal play. In 2006, Decision Games (copyright holder)
has exclusively listened remote play rights to Hexwars (UK Subscription
service). Although VASSAL admin has honored DG's request not to post a SPI
title modules. Other remote play tool may exists within Cyberboard, Aide
de Camp and other tools inferior to Vassal.
WARGAME ACADEMY COMMENTS: . I have started my first remote
play game of this title. I am challenged by both learning how to play and
how to play the CSA as I typically play Union in other civil war titles. From
the article base I have accumulated, this game was considered a playable monster
sized game with the potential to be a great game when the errata is incorporated
into the rulebook. However due to its size, the player based who attempted
this 30 years ago was likely small.
